I once came across Gail Heath’s book Inside Me, Sometimes, and I truly enjoyed it. Since then I’ve been trying to follow her other books. Her words are light and friendly. The books are educational and realistic. In this one I felt empathy the story taught. Poor Fred had to be thrown out… I really felt bad for poor Fred…but, no matter what, the little boy loveed him and went out to the doghouse to be with his pet---fleas and all.
This book is a must read for everyone, although more captivating for children, but children wouldn’t know unless we adults read it first. “Gail Heath” is very intelligent and knows how to represent the words in the story with the background pictures and concept. I will buy more of her books and definitely will recommend them to my friends and family.

“ My Dog Fred,“ a book written by Gail Heath, is a funny, rhythm and rhyme read, that serves as a useful tool for encouraging young students to read more without being told. The author tells her story about a lovable pooch named Fred, while capturing little readers attention by telling her tale in a sing-songy manner. Imagine a small circle of about eight to twelve readers sitting cross-legged on the floor. It’s story time, approximately mid-morning, and students are very much excited about their new book. The teacher would possibly have the students clap their hands along to the beat, as he reads the hilarious tale of a dog, who goes by the name, Fred. The story unfolds as a little boy talks about his favorite pal using words that are easy to read, in a language that’s easily understood by children his own age, as well as those who are younger. This book is a great way to motivate young readers to read books the whole way through.

"My Dog Fred" is a fun read! My niece and nephew liked it. It was the right length for them, the words were easy for them to read, the rhymes were enjoyable, and they were entertained by the illustrations. The story follows a family and their pet dog, Fred, who has a problem, and the family doesn't really know how to deal with it. However, by the end of it all, they figure it out and the notion of compassion triumphs.
Stories such as this are very important for a child to read--it reinforces the message of compassion. In particular, in this day and age, where values are constantly challenged by the overarching societal attitude. The best method to combat the constant challenges is to allow your child to absorb information with a positive message. "My Dog Fred"... two thumbs up!
